When Heather launched Hair by Heather in 2023, she knew she wanted her business to be more than just your typical salon experience. With nearly seven years of professional experience as a Paul Mitchell–educated cosmetologist, Heather has built her business around compassion, accessibility, and meeting clients where they are—literally.
Unlike traditional salons, Heather’s business is fully mobile, offering hairstyling services directly in the comfort of her clients’ homes. Her focus is on serving children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities or special needs—communities that are too often overlooked.
This is what drew us to Heather and her unique approach. Before I tell you more about who she is, let me share what she did for our family.
As parents of a child with autism who also experiences sensory challenges and is still developing communication skills, creating a safe and comfortable environment that meets her needs can sometimes feel impossible. Having someone like Heather—who shows patience, care, and a willingness to meet our daughter in her own environment—takes away a huge weight of stress that we often carry as special needs parents.
These are difficulties that are hard to truly understand unless you’ve been in the situation yourself. For our daughter, Delilah, haircuts are especially overwhelming. Her sensory issues related to touch and textures are very high right now. While we work on these challenges at home and through occupational therapy, progress takes time. We’ve celebrated some exciting milestones, but there are still many tough moments.
As special needs parents, we often worry about being judged, or that the patience of those around us might wear thin. This is where Heather truly shined. She silenced those fears by reassuring us that she had all the time Delilah needed. She gave Delilah space, spoke to her gently, brought toys, and made every possible accommodation to help her feel comfortable. What is usually a stressful, overwhelming experience—getting our daughter’s hair cut—became something that lifted a huge burden off our shoulders.
Heather also brings with her the kind of tools and products you’d expect from a high-end salon, so clients never feel like they are “settling” for less. Instead, they gain the benefit of a private, judgment-free space where they can simply be themselves. For parents of children with sensory needs, this often means a huge reduction in stress, fewer meltdowns, and even opportunities to celebrate small victories during each session.
Heather takes the time to understand each child’s unique triggers and comforts—whether that’s adjusting the noise level of clippers, allowing breaks during the process, or even starting with a toy or conversation before picking up a pair of scissors. These small, intentional steps make a big difference. What might feel like a routine haircut in a salon becomes a personalized, therapeutic experience that honors the child’s pace and boundaries.
For families who have struggled in traditional salon settings—where time constraints, bright lights, unfamiliar smells, and outside distractions can quickly become overwhelming—Heather’s mobile approach feels like a lifeline.
Cutting With Purpose
“Serving clients in professional salons over the years opened my eyes to a community-wide need for hair services provided by a caring heart and gentle hands,” Heather shared. “Classic salons can sometimes feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable for some. I wanted to turn that experience completely on its head.”
That vision came to life in a big way just two weeks ago when Heather made the bold decision to leave behind the traditional salon business and go completely mobile. Since then, she says she feels a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for the future of her business.
Her services are fully customized to each client’s comfort, needs, and abilities, ensuring that everyone can feel safe, respected, and valued during their appointment.

Heather is also passionate about building community through education. This September, she’ll be hosting her next Mommy and Me Hairstyling Class with a fun new theme: sports hairstyles—perfect for practices and game days alike.
Looking ahead, Heather hopes the legacy of Hair by Heather will be one of kindness, accessibility, and inclusion.
“For those with a diagnosis—whether physical, mental, emotional, or a combination—there can be so many barriers to getting something as simple as a haircut. I want to knock down some of those barriers by meeting clients exactly where they are. My hope is that every person I serve walks away knowing they matter, and that they deserve to be treated with patience, respect, and kindness.”
With her scissors, her skills, and her heart for others, Heather is redefining what it means to be in the hair industry—proving that sometimes, the best salon is right in your living room..
