Martinsville Mondays:

The Community Heart of

Bahama Sno-Shack

1 / 1

For more than a decade, Bahama Sno-Shack has been bringing sweet treats, refreshing drinks, and plenty of smiles to the Martinsville community. But for the person behind the business, the Shack represents something much deeper than a place to grab a cup of shaved ice. It represents a childhood dream that eventually became a reality and a business built around giving back.

Bahama Sno-Shack officially opened in its current chapter in 2021, but its roots in the Martinsville community stretch back much further.

The original Bahama Sno-Shack opened in the late 1990s at the location where Martinsville’s Sheetz now stands. After years of serving the community, the original owners eventually closed the business. In 2017, however, Bahama Sno-Shack was given a new beginning.

For the current owner, that new beginning was especially meaningful.

Owning the Shack wasn't simply a business opportunity. It was something they had dreamed about since they were a teenager.

“I remember wanting to own the Shack someday,” the owner shared. “Years later, that dream became a reality.”

Today, Bahama Sno-Shack has grown into a locally owned shaved ice, specialty beverage, and concession business serving customers from two locations, including a brick-and-mortar shop and a mobile unit that allows the business to take the Shack experience directly into the community.

Customers can enjoy a wide variety of shaved ice flavors and specialty sno creations, along with smoothies, dirty sodas, lemonades, specialty beverages, concession snacks, and sweet treats. Through its mobile unit, Bahama Sno-Shack also travels throughout the area for festivals, fairs, school and church events, sporting events, birthday parties, corporate gatherings, fundraisers, community celebrations, and other special occasions.

The mobile operation has become an important part of the business, allowing Bahama Sno-Shack to bring its fun atmosphere and refreshing treats wherever the community gathers.

But one of the things that makes the Shack particularly meaningful is its commitment to making sure more people can enjoy those experiences.

As an adult living with Alpha-Gal, the owner recognized an opportunity to make Bahama Sno-Shack a place where individuals with dietary restrictions could still enjoy a fun treat with family and friends. The business has worked to offer products and options that are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and Alpha-Gal friendly.

For the Shack, inclusion is another way of making sure everyone has a chance to be part of the experience.

Yet perhaps the most rewarding part of owning Bahama Sno-Shack isn't found on the menu at all, but in the people who have walked through the doors over the years.

One of the owner's proudest accomplishments has been watching young employees grow during their time at the Shack. Many of those employees have been high school students who eventually graduated and moved on to college, careers, and other accomplishments.

Being able to watch those young people grow and knowing that Bahama Sno-Shack played even a small role in their journey is something the owner considers one of the greatest rewards of the business.

Giving back to the community has always been an important part of Bahama Sno-Shack's mission. Over the years, the business has supported local schools, churches, nonprofits, community organizations, teams, events, and families through sponsorships, donations, and fundraising opportunities.

Whether helping an organization raise money, sponsoring a community event, or simply providing a place where families can gather and enjoy a treat together, Bahama Sno-Shack believes that being a local business means being invested in the community that supports it.

That philosophy is also at the heart of the legacy the owner hopes to leave behind.

Success isn't measured simply by how many cups of shaved ice are sold. It's measured by the good the business is able to do and the people it is able to serve.

For Bahama Sno-Shack, that might mean sponsoring a local team, supporting a school or nonprofit, helping with a fundraiser, giving young people their first job, or simply creating a place where families can make memories together.

After all, the Shack has become about much more than shaved ice.

It is about people. It's about relationships. It's about memories. And it's about making a difference right here at home.

As Bahama Sno-Shack looks toward the future, the business is excited about the possibility of bringing some new and exciting changes in the coming season. Whatever comes next, one thing remains at the heart of the Shack: a commitment to the community that has supported it for generations.

What began as a teenager's dream has grown into a business with a purpose and for Bahama Sno-Shack, the sweetest part of the journey is being able to give back to the community it calls home.

I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand what Bahama Sno-Shack means to our community, but for me, it’s personal too. As a parent, some of my favorite memories are simply sitting at the picnic table with my family, enjoying my favorite sno-cone and making memories together.

I also have Alpha-Gal, so I understand how meaningful it is when a business takes the time to consider dietary restrictions. Knowing that Bahama Sno-Shack works to offer Alpha-Gal friendly, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options means a lot to me because it allows more people and families to enjoy those same experiences.

To me, that’s what makes the Shack so special. It’s not just about shaved ice, it’s about inclusion, community, and creating the little moments that become lasting memories.
